Summer in Australia

Summer in Australia can be loads of fun; beaches, long days, and thongs, but did you know that your eyes may be suffering from too much UV exposure?

The Facts

Almost 60 per cent of Australians believe it is only the midday sun that poses the greatest UV threat but this not the case. UV exposure to the eye before 10am and after 2pm may be higher than during the middle of the day due to the suns position in the sky. For this reason it is extremely important that your eyes are protected from UV all day and all year round. Research has shown that a greater proportion of ultraviolet rays can reach the eye from scattered sunlight from clouds and light reflected from the ground and off water.

The Risks

It is a little known fact that accumulated UV exposure to your eyes can lead to cataracts, macular degeneration, pterygium and skin cancer of the eyelids and around the eyes. Short bursts of unprotected UV exposure can lead to eye pain, irritation and sensitivity to light. All UV eye exposure, regardless of how short, adds up in the long term.

Reduce your UV exposure by simply:

  • asking for protective coating to your prescription lenses
  • buying prescription sunglasses with back surface UV protection/buy fitover sunglasses.
